Not your city? Perfect Day watches yours and tells you both.
Warm and sunny
- A picnic of bread, cheese and one thing from a bakery, under a tree.
- A swim in a lake, a lido or a river beach you have never tried.
- Bikes to an ice cream and the long way home.
- A rowing boat, badly.
- The botanical garden with the labels read aloud.
- A farmers' market, then cooking what you bought, outside.
- A hammock or a blanket and two books, no phones, one afternoon.
- Kite flying. Adults are allowed.
- A free outdoor concert, gig or film; most cities run them all summer.
- Sketching the same view side by side, then swapping.
Clear and cold
- A long walk with a thermos, ending at a fire.
- The zoo in winter, when the animals are awake and the paths are empty.
- An early sunset from a hill, with gloves.
- Ice skating where there is ice; a viewpoint where there is not.
- A frosty-morning coffee walk before anyone else is up.
- A bonfire or a fire pit and one blanket between two.
- Bird-watching with borrowed binoculars and no idea what anything is.
- A cold-water dip and a hot drink after, for the brave.
Golden hour
- The neighbourhood walk you have done a hundred times, at the one hour you never do it.
- A drink carried to the highest public place nearby.
- Portraits of each other on a phone, in that light.
- A sunset that is really a sandwich and the sky.
- A slow drive with the windows down and no destination.
- A pier, a jetty or a bridge, and the water going gold.
A calm evening
- Dinner cooked at home and carried outside.
- An evening swim when the day-crowd has gone.
- A walk to a bar you have not tried, and a walk back.
- Badminton, boules, catch or frisbee, no score kept.
- Sitting still outside until the first star.
- A late walk through the part of town with the lit windows.
- Ice cream after dark, eaten on a wall.
- Reading to each other on a bench, which sounds ridiculous and is not.
After the rain
- Puddle-lit streets after dark.
- A garden while it is still dripping; the smell is the date.
- Coffee to go, taken to wherever the sky is doing something.
- Wellies and the muddiest path you know.
A clear night
- Stargazing from a blanket in the darkest spot you can walk to.
- A meteor shower, on its night, with a flask. (When the sky will actually be clear this week.)
- A full moon rising at sunset, watched from the east side of anything high.
- A night walk with no torch, letting your eyes adjust. Twenty minutes in, you can see.
The one thing all forty need
Not money. Not much time. The right day, known in advance, so that it does not pass unnoticed on a Tuesday. Perfect Day watches for the kind of evening you describe — warm, still, clear, whichever — and tells you both, days ahead, when one is coming. Then you pick a number from this list.
