Outdoor date ideas for every kind of good-weather day
There is no such thing as a nice day; there are kinds of good day, and each one is an excuse for a different date. Sort the ideas by the weather instead of by the mood and the “I don't know, what do you want to do?” loop mostly disappears.

This week's evening, where you are
Before the ideas, the day. Below, the coming week's evenings in 25 cities, judged hour by hour for a date outside — 58° to 82°, dry, still, three hours in a row from five until dusk. When nothing works, it says so.

Not your city? Perfect Day watches yours, against your own idea of a good evening, and tells you both.
A warm, sunny afternoon
The obvious kind, and the most wasted, because it arrives on a weekday and nobody has a plan. Have one ready.
- A picnic that is only cheese, bread, fruit and one thing from a bakery. Under a tree, not in the open; the shade is the luxury.
- A swim somewhere you have never swum — a lake, a lido, a river beach — and lunch after, still damp.
- Bikes to somewhere that sells ice cream, and the long way back.
- A rowing boat on any pond that rents them. Nobody is good at it. That is the point.
- The botanical garden, slowly, with the plant labels read out loud.
Clear and cold
The underrated kind. A still, bright, cold day has better light than summer, no crowds, and a built-in second act indoors.
- A long walk with a thermos of something hot, ending at a fire — a pub's, a fire pit's, your own.
- The zoo in winter: the animals are awake and the paths are empty.
- A frosty morning at a farmers' market, then cooking what you bought.
- Skating, if there is ice; a climb to a viewpoint, if there is not. Cold clear air is when you can see furthest.
- An early sunset watched on purpose, from a hill, with gloves.
Golden hour
The last hour before sunset on any clear day. It is short and it is free and it turns any ordinary place into a photograph.
- The neighbourhood walk you have done a hundred times, at the one hour you never do it.
- A drink carried to the highest public place nearby: a roof garden, a pier, a hill, a car park with a view.
- Portraits of each other on a phone, in that light. Everyone looks good in it. Nobody deletes those.
- A sunset picnic that is really a sandwich and the sky.
A calm evening
Mild, dry, still, from five until dark. The kind of evening a forecast app shows as nothing in particular, and the best evening of the week.
- Dinner outside — cooked at home and carried out, or a table on a pavement — with nowhere to be afterwards.
- An evening swim, if the water is warm enough, when the light is low and the day-crowd has gone.
- A slow walk to a bar you have not tried, and a slow walk back.
- Badminton, boules, catch, frisbee: anything with a ball and no score.
- Sitting still, outside, until the first star. This counts.
After the rain
The hour the rain stops is its own kind of good day. Everything is clean, the air is soft, and everyone else is still indoors.
- Puddle-lit streets after dark, which is the whole reason for a walk.
- A garden or a park while it is still dripping; the smell is the date.
- Coffee to go, taken to wherever the sky is doing something.
A clear night
Cloud under a quarter, no rain, a couple of still hours after nine. Rarer than it sounds in most cities; when it comes, use it. We wrote that one up on its own: Clear-night date ideas: when the sky will actually be clear this week.
How to have these ready
The ideas are not the hard part. The hard part is knowing on Tuesday that Thursday evening is the calm one, so that Thursday is kept. That is what planning a date around the weather without checking the forecast every day is about, and it is what Perfect Day does: describe the evening you want once, and both of you hear, days ahead, when it is coming.
